Basically making Karate a way of life.

A Brief History of the Japan Karate Association*

Originally, the martial art Te (“Hand”) developed in Okinawa as a system of self-defense. Due to Okinawa’s frequent contact and exchange with China, it is certain that the Okinawan martial art was influenced by Chinese kempo at some point during its development. However, with only oral tradition and no formal contemporary written records, it is not certain exactly when the art called Kara-Te first emerged in Okinawa. It is believed that it developed roughly 500 years ago, when the dynastic ruler King Shoha unified the region after decades of warfare and issued an edict banning the possession of weapons on the island.

According to conventional accounts, a similar law forbidding the possession or use of weapons was re-issued and enforced by the Satsuma clan, who had invaded Okinawa in the early 1600’s and brought it under the rule of the Japanese Shogunate. It is believed that in this environment karate developed as a form of unarmed combat for protecting oneself and one’s country, and it was taught and practiced in secret.

Then came the birth in 1868 of Okinawan karate master Funakoshi Gichin. He dedicated his whole life to promoting the values of the art, and introduced the way of karate-jutsu to Japan, where it spread across the country. By 1949, his followers had established an association for the promotion of karate; they called it Nihon Karate Kyokai, or Japan Karate Association. It was the beginning of the JKA…

Karate is a way of life…

Practiced through training the body and mind, self-control, and discipline.

Japanese karate is based on Bushido. In true karate, the body, mind and spirit, the whole person must be developed simultaneously. We can perform the techniques without thinking about them, and remain focused without having to concentrate on any one thing. In essence, the body remembers how to move and the mind remembers how to be still. The result of true karate is natural, effortless action, and the confidence, humility, openness and peace only possible through perfect unity of mind and body. This is the core teaching of Zen, the basis of Bushido, and the of the JKA’s karate philosophy.

About JKA/WF Australia

JKA/WF Australia is a community built around the practice, teaching and appreciation of traditional Japanese Karate. Our goal is to make authentic Karate accessible to people across the country while encouraging students to develop not only their physical skills, but also the discipline, confidence and mindset that come with consistent Karate Australia training.

Keeping Traditional Karate Alive in Australia

Karate is a martial art with a rich history, but its value goes far beyond learning punches, kicks and defensive movements. Karate Australia training teaches students how to remain focused under pressure, work towards long-term goals and approach challenges with determination.

At JKA/WF Australia, we believe these lessons are just as valuable outside the dojo as they are during training. Every class provides an opportunity to improve technique, strengthen the body and develop greater mental awareness.

Our approach to Karate Australia is centred on maintaining the traditional character of Shotokan while creating an encouraging environment for practitioners at different levels. Beginners can build their foundations step by step, while experienced students can continue refining their skills and understanding of the art.

Our Connection to the Japan Karate Association

Being connected with the Japan Karate Association gives JKA/WF Australia an important link to the international Karate community. The JKA has played a significant role in spreading largest Shotokan Karate around the world and continues to be recognised for its technical standards and commitment to Karate education.

This international connection allows Australian practitioners to remain connected with a broader Karate tradition while training within their local communities. It also supports opportunities for learning, development and interaction with other Karate practitioners.

A Strong Foundation in Shotokan Karate

Shotokan is known for its strong fundamentals, precise techniques and emphasis on disciplined practice. Rather than rushing through movements, students are encouraged to understand how and why techniques are performed.

JKA/WF Australia promotes this approach by helping practitioners develop solid foundations before progressing to more advanced training. Over time, students can improve their balance, coordination, timing, flexibility, strength and concentration.

For many practitioners, the journey is not about becoming the strongest person in the room. It is about becoming a better version of yourself through regular practice.

Part of a Global Karate Tradition

The largest Shotokan Karate organisations have helped introduce traditional Karate to practitioners in countries around the world. JKA/WF Australia forms part of this wider international community, giving Australian students an opportunity to experience Karate as both a local activity and a global martial-art tradition. Our clubs bring together people with different backgrounds and levels of experience, united by an interest in learning Karate and improving themselves.
